Dorm Room Essentials to Pack

Leaving your parents’ house and moving into your first dorm or apartment is a big deal—exciting, a little nerve-wracking, and full of stuff no one really warns you about. But don’t worry! Good Move Movers has a comprehensive list of what to bring, what to do, and how to survive the transition to your first dorm room.

The following items are absolute necessities… Don’t leave home without them!

  • Bedding: Two sets of twin XL bed sheets, a comforter, pillows, a comfy mattress topper (if you like)
  • Laundry: Hamper, detergent, dryer sheets, laundry bag
  • Toiletries: Shower caddy, towels, toothbrush, soap, flip-flops for communal showers… Athlete’s foot LOVES dorm showers!
  • Storage: Under-bed bins, drawer organizers, hanging shelves – and other storage solutions as needed. No one has ever been heard saying “This dorm room is way too big!”
  • Kitchen (if allowed): Mini fridge, microwave, reusable dishes, cutlery, dish soap
  • Tech: Laptop, phone charger, extension cords, power strip, headphones, maybe a desk lamp as the overhead light is usually pretty depressing
  • Decor & Extras: Desk lamp, posters, whiteboard, plants (if permitted)…  Stuff to make the space feel like your own
  • Cleaning Supplies: Disinfectant wipes, cleaning spray like 409 or Clorox, a small broom/dustpan, and of course paper towels
  • Documents: ID, insurance cards, medical info, student ID… you won’t get into your dorm without this!

Adulting 101 (Stuff You'll Be Glad You Know)

  • Budgeting: Try to keep track of your spending. Apps help. So does not buying takeout every night.
  • Basic Cooking: Learn 2–3 easy meals you won’t get sick of. Pasta, rice bowls, eggs—start simple. (If you want some inspiration, Delish has published it’s Best Dorm Room Recipes)
  • Laundry: Separate lights and darks. Don’t use too much detergent. Avoid shrinking your favorite hoodie.
  • Cleaning: Do it more often than you think you need to. It’s easier than cleaning a huge mess later.
  • Time Management: Classes, work, social stuff—use a planner or calendar app to keep your brain in check.

  • Roommate Agreement: Talk about who pays for what, chores, quiet hours—before things get awkward.
  • Emergency Info: Know how to contact campus security or local emergency services… and be sure you and your roommate have each other’s emergency contacts
